Yes, WhatsApp Motion Photos are indeed Coming Soon to Android. Recently, WhatsApp has been testing a new feature for Android users called Motion Photos, spotted in beta version 2.25.22.29. This motion photo feature is like Similar to Apple’s Live Photos.
The Motion Photos will work as saving a few seconds before and after the snapshot. This motion photo feature will be able to capture a few seconds before and after you take a picture, complete with sound. This turns simple snapshots into lively, immersive memories.
What Are WhatsApp Motion Photos?
If I say in easy words, the Motion Photos is going to blend still photography with short video clips. Along with the image you capture, they store subtle movements and background sounds like laughter, rustling leaves, or ocean waves — making your memories feel more vivid and real.
How to Use Motion Photos on WhatsApp
To use this motion feature, you need to open your gallery within WhatsApp.
- Tap the motion icon in the top-left corner of the photo preview.
- Send as a Motion Photo or switch to still mode if preferred.
- When sent, the receiver will see a motion icon, indicating that the picture includes movement and audio.

Why This Feature Is a Big Deal
This is a very big deal for WhatsApp users. Until now, they have been using third-party apps to make their photos animate or GIFs to share, often sacrificing quality. With native Motion Photos, playback is smoother, files are lighter, and no extra apps are needed.
Who Can Try It Right Now
Currently, only Android beta testers with devices supporting Samsung’s Motion Photo or Google Pixel’s Top Shot can create these moving snapshots. Even if you can’t capture them yourself, you can still view Motion Photos sent by others. (Pixel owners: enabling 50MP mode will turn off this feature.)
WhatsApp has not yet confirmed a public release date. However, with growing excitement among beta users, the feature could roll out widely very soon. iOS users, on the other hand, will need to wait a bit longer.
